Lecture by Dr. Sohi Rastegar

July, 12 2012

NIPSIA is very proud that Dr. Sohi Rastegar, the Director of Office of Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) at the National Science Foundation (NSF), accepted its invitation and presented a lecture at the USPTO on "Emerging Interdisciplinary Research Ideas" for the USPTO patent examiners.

Abstract of the talk

The Office of Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) at NSF has been established as a result of strategic planning and reorganization of NSF Engineering Directorate (ENG). Motivated by the vision of ENG to be the global leader in advancing the frontiers of fundamental engineering research, EFRI serves a critical role in helping ENG focus on important emerging areas in a timely manner. Some of the current topics are: Flexible Bioelectronics Systems, Photosynthetic Biorefineries (PSBR), Multicellular and Inter-kingdom Signaling (MIKS), Mind, Machines, and Motor Control (M3C), and Insights From Biological World to Inspire New Engineering Capabilities. Interdisciplinary teams are exploring powerful biological signals and the intersection between minds and machines. Results from this research promise to impact human health, the environment, energy, robotics, and manufacturing.
